Students who receive in-person or online tutoring from SCC The Writing Center must agree to abide by the following guidelines:
- Students must be currently enrolled (for credit) in SCC classes. The Writing Center cannot serve students who are enrolled in other universities or community colleges or in non-credit SCC classes.
- Students may schedule only one (1) appointment at a time and may receive a maximum of one (1) hour of tutoring per day.
- If a student is 10 minutes late for an appointment, the student forfeits the tutorial session, and the tutor may take a walk-in appointment. If a student accumulates two (2) “no shows” (missing or showing up late to an appointment without calling), that student is no longer eligible to schedule appointments for the remainder of the semester. The student may, however, see a tutor on a walk-in basis if time allows.
- Authors of papers must be present for the tutoring session. Tutors will not work with a student who brings in a friend’s, spouse’s, or classmate’s essay, nor will they proofread, edit, or fix a paper that has been dropped off.
- Tutors do not edit, proofread or fix errors in student papers. Tutors work with students at any stage of the writing process to improve the student’s own writing abilities, including editing and proofreading as time allows.
- Upon request, tutors will provide proof of tutoring (a pink slip) when the student spends 30 scheduled minutes discussing and improving his or her work with a tutor.
- For safety reasons, no children are permitted in the Writing Center. Please make other arrangements.
- FOOD, DRINKS, and TOBACCO PRODUCTS are not permitted in the Writing Center.
- Students must TURN OFF CELL PHONES prior to entering the Writing Center. Please conduct phone conversations outside the center.
- Students are expected to demonstrate mature, respectful behavior toward all Writing Center technicians, tutors, and staff as well as fellow students.
Four Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Tutoring Session:
- Check in with a staff member at the front desk at your appointed time.
- Bring your assignment sheet, books, notes and rough drafts to each session.
- Be prepared to discuss your assignment or work with the tutor (no dropping off papers).
- Allow yourself plenty of time to incorporate suggestions.
