FAQ

Who may use the Writing Center?
Any student currently enrolled at SCC can use the Center’s tutoring and computer services.

What disciplines does the Writing Center support?
Individual assistance is available for any SCC writing assignment, not just those assigned in English classes. One-on-one tutoring is also provided for ESL, Spanish, Italian, and American Sign Language*.  From time to time, conversation classes are held for ESL, Italian,  and Spanish.

How can I make an appointment with a tutor?
Tutoring appointments can be made at the front desk in the Writing Center (LC 379) or by telephone at 480.423.6416. (Students may also work with tutors on a drop-in basis, but we strongly recommend making appointments in advance.)

When are tutors available?
To find out when tutors are available, please call, stop by, or check our schedules page.

What does it cost to work with a tutor?
Nothing! Tutoring services are FREE for currently enrolled students.

What if I need assistance with a writing project but can’t make it to campus?
If you can’t come to campus for an appointment, you can use our online tutoring service to talk live with one of our tutors. The tutor can view your paper, make suggestions, speak with you, and answer your questions, just as she would during an in-person session. To schedule an online session, stop by the Writing Center at LC 379 or call 480.423.6416.

Alternatively, you can use our e-mail service to submit an essay online for review, along with any questions you might have. A tutor will review your essay and respond by e-mail within two (2) business days.

What if I have a quick question about grammar, punctuation, MLA, etc.?
If you have a quick question, feel free to stop by the Center or call us at 480.423.6416, and one of our tutors will be happy to answer your question.

What computer resources are available in the Center?
The Writing Center has 39 PCs and 1 Macintosh, all of which have Office 2013 and Internet capability. Students may use computers to type papers, conduct research, access mySCC, work through grammar drills, and practice foreign language skills.

Do I need an appointment to use a computer?
No. Computers are available on a first-come-first-served basis.  During peak hours, priority will be given to students completing assignments for English, World Languages, and Journalism courses.
