(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 7, 2018) — Scottsdale Community College’s Music Department presents its Annual Music Showcase, Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, in the school’s Performing Arts Center.
The event, which is free to attend and open to the public, features an eclectic menu of musical performances from students and music faculty. Jazz singer/guitarist George Benson will be on hand to award the George Benson Scholarship to this year’s top music student.
“We’re featuring collaboration between students and faculty and highlighting the broad musical genres and influences that make up our Music Department,” said Eric Rasmussen, SCC’s director of instrumental music. “Performances will feature bluegrass, 80s inspired singer-songwriter music, jazz meets hip hop and classical genres.”
This year marks the seventh year the Benson Scholarship has been awarded. Joseph Thomas, who plays the saxophone, will receive $1,500 to pursue his studies.
Thomas plays in various SCC jazz ensembles and bands and carries a 3.8 grade point average. He expects to graduate this May.
“Attending Scottsdale Community College has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he said. “All my mentors here have changed my life.”
