Furniture delivery phase now complete

The delivery of furniture to the library is now complete and our IT department will begin work on installing technology next week. As you can see the furniture includes an array of soft seating, study tables and study carrels.

Certificate of Occupancy issued

After more than three years of on-again, off-again work on the Library renovation, SCC has received the official Certificate of Occupancy, which marks the “move-in” phase of the project.

Over the summer, furniture will be delivered, IT installations will occur and books will be reshelved, with an anticipated soft opening in early August and a fully operational library ready for the start of Fall semester.

While the project has taken longer than anyone could have imagined, our new Library will be a wonderful space for our students, faculty, staff and the community to enjoy for years to come.

Thank you for your patience.

Announcement:
The following message is for your information and is planned for email dissemination to students this week. Please use this information if you receive questions about the project. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Dear Students,

The ongoing renovation of SCC’s main library will continue through this semester. We wish it could go faster, but we’re not willing to sacrifice quality or safety in order to open a few months sooner. While the outward appearance of the Library may seem like the project is complete, please know that significant work is still underway on the inside to ensure all of the work is done at the highest quality and meets all safety and building code standards prior to opening.

Again, we are very sorry for the continued delay in providing our students and the community with a state of the art library that you deserve and expect. Our current projection is to have the library fully open for Fall 2016.

In the meantime, please continue to use the temporary library space located in the Student Center, which provides computer and printer access, study space, librarian assistance and books/periodicals available for reading, reference and checkout. Access to the temporary library is on the West side of the Student Center.

While this is not the same as having a full-service library, we hope it is at least helpful while the library renovation project continues.

Update from Carl Couch, VP of Admin. Svcs., 8/25/15

Library and Xeriscape projects: We continue to work with our new General Contractor on these projects. While skilled and on task, progress is slower than we’d like. As we address the known defective work, we are uncovering additional deficiencies that require further investigation to determine the full extent of action needed.

Presently, the Contractor believes they can complete all work by January, 2016.  Once construction is finished, furniture installation can occur and our technology contractor can complete work to install and connect the extensive amount of technology envisioned for the project. Finally, once technology is installed, we can transition Library personnel and the collection to the building. While all efforts will be made to expedite these tasks, we must realistically anticipate that full library services will not be available until Summer, 2016.

After meeting with the Library Division last week, and obtaining the approval of Faculty Senate, I’m pleased to share that our interim library services will be expanded into the Copper Room until we occupy the completed library.  Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be working to set up student access to technology, as well as some casual study space.

Many apologies to our students and faculty who have been inconvenienced by the protracted completion schedule. Particularly impacted have been our Library professionals who have been providing the best services possible in less than optimum circumstances. While faint, there is a light at the end of the tunnel (and no, it’s not a train).
